Meat Processing Plants – Queensland
Engaged by Teys Australia Knobel Engineers coordinated a multi consultant design team responsible for delivering the bio gas wastewater treatment plant for the Rockhampton and Beenleigh Plants.
Knobel Engineers managed a team comprising of civil, structural and hydraulic disciplines with support from electrical and architectural consultants. Works involved planning, design and supervision of the various elements of the system including earthworks, roadworks, pipework and buildings. Stakeholder liaison was also required with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) and Queensland Rail (QR) for approval to tunnel bore pipework beneath Lakes Creek Road and the Railway Line.
The biogas (methane) generated from the treatment plant is being used as a new power source to the meat works. The plant, which will improve the environmental footprint of the facility with anaerobic lagoons designed to deliver improved water quality after treatment, resulting in significantly reduced impacts to the local environment. The methane emitted during the wastewater treatment process will be used to generate steam for use around the facility which is expected to reduce the facility’s coal consumption by about 30%.
